Two strangers arrive, and the family realizes their devices were never the only things failing. It is a tense look at how quickly modern comfort evaporates when the connection drops.
What the critics said
The reception lands in that specific pocket where a film is "generally favorable" but not exactly adored. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 73% Tomatometer score as of July 2024, while Metacritic sits at 68 out of 100 as of August 2024. Michael O’Sullivan of The Washington Post noted it plays like an M. Night Shyamalan movie, minus the supernatural element. Not everyone bought the ticket. Bilge Ebiri of Vulture argued the adaptation fails to care about its own characters. The ending was designed to be a conversation starter, not a resolution.
How it did with audiences
TMDB users rate it 6.4 out of 10. From December 4 to December 10, 2023, it sat at number one on Netflix with 41.7 million views. By year’s end, that total reached 121 million. In January 2024, it climbed to eighth on the all-time list after 136.3 million views in its first 52 days. By September 2024, it held the fifth spot for English-language films with 143.4 million views.

Julia Roberts traded heists and romances for a 2025 legal thriller. Ethan Hawke moved from high school poetry to horror sequels. Mahershala Ali jumped from dystopian dystopias to dinosaurs. Myha'la went from a meta-comedy to a 2026 murder mystery. The jump is jarring, but careers rarely move in straight lines.
