What kind of watch this is
McG directs this 85-minute blend of comedy and horror. It leans hard into the absurdity of a teenager realizing his babysitter, Bee, leads a Satanic cult. The movie does not treat the premise with reverence. It treats it as a punchline that keeps landing. Cole’s panic is played for laughs, not dread. The violence is cartoonish. The stakes are low. The humor is high. It is a film that knows it is a bit silly. That self-awareness is the point.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 70% approval rating as of January 2025, alongside a 6.6/10 average from October 2021. The consensus calls it "enjoyable if not particularly original," a verdict that leans on energy rather than invention. Felix Vasquez Jr. of Cinema Crazed saw a "genuinely touching tale of growing up" beneath the gore. Matt Donato of Dread Central rated it 4/5, praising Samara Weaving’s sudden rise. Not everyone agreed. William Bibbiani at IGN gave it 4.8/10, arguing it fails as both horror and comedy. Blake Goble at Consequence of Sound called it "heinous.
How it did with audiences
There is no box office figure to parse, so we look to the numbers that remain. On TMDB, users rate it 6.2 out of 10. That is a score that suggests the movie did its job, but perhaps not the one everyone expected. It sits comfortably in the middle, where most comedies go to wait for a specific mood.
