What kind of watch this is
Seth MacFarlane directed Ted, a 2012 comedy fantasy that runs 107 minutes. The premise involves John Bennett, a man whose childhood wish for a living teddy bear actually came true. Now he must choose between that friendship and his girlfriend, Lori. Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis anchor the human side of the equation. It is a film about the messy business of outgrowing a childhood companion, or failing to.
What the critics said
Critics largely agreed the movie works, even if they didn't love it. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 69% approval rating as of August 2024, while Metacritic lands on a 62 Metascore as of July 2025. That is the territory of "generally favorable." Roger Ebert saw the best comedy screenplay of the year. A.O. Scott saw boring laziness. They cannot both be right, but they were both watching. The script is funny, just not consistently.
How it did with audiences
Ted made $549 million worldwide, which likely made the studio smile. That total included $218.8 million from North America and $330.6 million from overseas markets. Against a $50 million budget, it was Universal’s highest-grossing film of 2012, beating out Snow White and the Huntsman and Battleship. It also landed as the 12th-highest-grossing film of that year. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Joel McHale moved from Spider-Man 2 to Blended and Deliver Us from Evil. The credits suggest a comedy pivot, though The Bear arrived years later. Mark Wahlberg stepped away from The Departed into Transformers: Age of Extinction and Uncharted. Mila Kunis followed Black Swan with Jupiter Ascending and Bad Moms. Seth MacFarlane traded animation for westerns and slapstick. These are trajectories, not reactions. The film did not cause them; it merely sat in the middle of a long, winding road.
