The film leans into the horror genre, treating the characters' vendetta against Judge Turpin, played by Alan Rickman, with a grim, gothic seriousness. It is not a lighthearted romp. The partnership between Todd and Mrs. Lovett feels less like a romance and more like a shared trauma. If you expect a campy musical, you will be disappointed. If you want to see what happens when a man spends years planning a revenge and then executes it with surgical precision, this is the film.
What the critics said
Critics generally agreed the film worked. Rotten Tomatoes cites an 86% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, alongside a 7.7/10 average rating from October 2021. Metacritic landed on 83/100 in July 2025, which signals universal acclaim. The consensus calls it macabre and entertaining. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it four stars, praising Burton’s visual style. Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly awarded it a B-plus, comparing Burton’s gore direction to a Jackson Pollock. Sondheim, initially cautious, was largely impressed by the result.
How it did with audiences
It cost $50 million and took in $153 million, a tidy return. On TMDB, users rate it 7.2 out of 10. That is solid ground for a film about a man who turns his profession into a very literal blood sport.
