What kind of watch this is
Director Christophe Gans builds a 125-minute descent into a town that smells of rust and ash. The horror does not come from jump scares, but from the weight of a mother’s grief mutating into something architectural. Silent Hill is a mystery where the answer is a wound. It asks what you would lose to fix a broken child, then shows you the price in concrete and fire. The tagline, "We've been expecting you," lands with the cold precision of a door unlocking from the inside.
What the critics said
Critics panned it, mostly. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 32% as of June 2023. Metacritic lands on 31 out of 100, a score that signals general disapproval. Roger Ebert called it "an incredibly good-looking film" but admitted he did not understand the story. James Berardinelli agreed on the visuals, noting the movie "looks great" despite being overlong. Don R. Lewis summed it up as "the best-looking bad film I've ever seen". The consensus blames the dialogue and the plot. The visuals did the heavy lifting, and the script just stood there, confused.
What came next for the cast
Sean Bean walked away from the Fellowship and the King, only to return for Game of Thrones and The Martian. Radha Mitchell left Pitch Black to haunt Olympus and London. Jodelle Ferland traded Carrie for The Cabin in the Woods. Laurie Holden swapped The X-Files for The Walking Dead and Dumb and Dumber To. The credits do not claim Silent Hill directed their paths. They just happened to cross it.
