What kind of watch this is

Star Wars is a 121-minute adventure that treats space like a dusty, loud frontier. George Lucas built a galaxy where heroes are scrappy, villains are polished, and the technology looks like it was salvaged from a hardware store. The hook is simple: a farm boy meets a smuggler and a princess, and the stakes are the whole universe. It moves fast and never apologizes for being loud.

What the critics said

Critics in 1977 were less divided than later debates suggest. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 94% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, while Metacritic assigns a 90 Metascore. Roger Ebert called it "an out-of-body experience," a phrase that does most of the heavy lifting. Gerald Clarke of Time noted it was a "subliminal history of the movies." Not everyone agreed. Pauline Kael of The New Yorker argued it lacked "emotional grip.

How it did with audiences

It cost $11 million and took $775 million worldwide, a ratio that makes accountants smile and other people wonder how the math works. In the US, it pulled in $461 million. On TMDB, users rate it 8.2 out of 10. The numbers are big enough to stop arguing about why they’re so big.

Awards

The film collected 21 awards from 10 nominations. The Academy handed out 6 Oscars, including Best Film Editing for Marcia Lucas and Best Original Score for John Williams. It also took home a Special Achievement Award for Ben Burtt’s sound work. The Saturn Awards gave it 13 trophies, spanning directing to special effects. A movie can have too much recognition; it just means the paperwork piles up.

What came next for the cast

Harrison Ford entered 1977 with the quiet tension of The Conversation and the youthful energy of American Graffiti. The credits that followed read like a sci-fi bible: The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and eventually Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Peter Cushing, meanwhile, arrived after a lifetime of classic horror and mystery, with Dracula and The Hound of the Baskervilles under his belt. He left with a single, surprisingly comedic turn in Top Secret! The films do not prove the cause. They just show where the careers landed next.
