Rotten Tomatoes sits at 84%, a figure that suggests the film worked well enough for most people. Metacritic lands on 72, which is the polite way of saying "generally favorable." The consensus calls it visually spectacular and rock-solid, even if it lacks the freshness of its predecessor. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone found Cumberbatch’s villain "for the ages." A.O. Scott of The New York Times called it uninspired hackwork, arguing that blue lens flares do not constitute a personal statement. It is a solid entry that some found a bit too familiar.
How it did with audiences
A $190 million budget against $467 million worldwide. That is a solid return, though not the record-shattering blow Paramount likely hoped for. It finished as the highest-grossing film in the franchise, a title that feels a bit hollow when the opening weekend underperformed expectations. TMDB users give it a 7.3. Rob Moore said he was "extremely pleased" with the sequel's performance.
