What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports an 85% approval rating for the series, with Metacritic assigning a weighted average of 73 out of 100 from 41 critics. That translates to generally favorable reviews. The critical consensus notes the show takes an episode to achieve liftoff before delivering a solid installment led by Sonequa Martin-Green. Later seasons saw shifts in the numbers, with the third season reaching 91% and the fourth at 88%. The fifth season closed the run at 80%.
How it did with audiences
The first episode drew 9.5 million viewers on CBS, a figure Nielsen described as decent. That premiere triggered record signups for CBS All Access, its biggest day, week, and month of subscriptions. App Annie noted mobile app downloads more than doubled, while in-app revenue doubled compared to the prior 30 days. By 2020, Parrot Analytics ranked it the 12th most in-demand streaming series. In March 2021, JustWatch estimated it was the most in-demand series on Paramount+ at launch. Paramount+ later revealed it was the most watched series for the service’s inaugural year. It holds a 6.9 TMDB user score.
Awards
Star Trek: Discovery collected 6 awards. Jason Isaacs took the 2018 Empire Award. Sonequa Martin-Green picked up Saturn Awards in both 2018 and 2019. The series itself won the 2018 Saturn for Best New Media Television Series and the 2019 Primetime Emmy for Prosthetic Makeup. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar later named it one of the six best "morale-boosting TV dramas for people of color.
What came next for the cast
Sonequa Martin-Green moved from The Walking Dead and Once Upon a Time to Space Jam: A New Legacy. Doug Jones traded Pan’s Labyrinth and Men in Black II for Hocus Pocus 2 and What We Do in the Shadows. Mary Wiseman left Longmire for Marriage Story, The Residence, and Office Romance. The credits list what followed, not what caused it. Sometimes the next role is just the next door.
