What kind of watch this is
Miles Morales gets bitten by a radioactive spider. That is the premise. The film, however, is not about the bite. It is about the noise. Every frame is a collage of comic book panels, pop culture references, and shifting aspect ratios. The animation style changes depending on who is speaking. It is loud, colorful, and visually chaotic in a way that feels deliberate rather than messy. Directed by Bob Persichetti, the movie runs 117 minutes. It treats the superhero origin story as a genre to be deconstructed. The humor is sharp and the stakes are personal. It is a film that knows exactly how much it is doing and leans into every inch of it.
What the critics said
Critics did not just like it; they seemed relieved. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 97% approval rating based on 399 reviews, an average of 8.8 out of 10. Metacritic settles on 87, which it labels universal acclaim. It is the best-reviewed superhero film on the site, a record that does not require much explanation. David Ehrlich of IndieWire called it "hilarious and ultimately even poignant." Oliver Jones of The New York Observer compared its visual chaos to an "LSD freak-out on par with 2001: A Space Odyssey." The consensus is loud, but the visuals are louder.
Awards
The film took home 5 major awards, including Best Animated Feature from the Academy, the Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice. It also swept the Annie and BAFTA categories. The Academy win marked the 6th time a non-Disney or Pixar film claimed the trophy since Rango. The voting body finally looked past the usual suspects, a rare and refreshing occurrence.
