What kind of watch this is
Jaume Collet-Serra directs this 125-minute film. It skips the slow burn. Black Adam wakes up, picks a fight, and breaks a few things before the credits roll. The tone is loud and unapologetic. It does not ask for your patience. It asks for your volume knob to be turned up. If you want a protagonist who solves problems with physics rather than dialogue, this is the one. It is a direct hit for the chest.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 38% as of February 2023, while Metacritic lands on 41 out of 100 as of August 2025. Those are not numbers that celebrate the experience. Critics called it repetitive and anti-entertaining. J. Kim Murphy of Variety agreed with that assessment. Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times, however, found it fast and entertaining. The divide is sharp.
How it did with audiences
Black Adam cost $260 million to make and brought in $393 million worldwide. That is a profit, though a thin one. In North America, it earned $168 million, and the UK added $24 million. Mexico and France each contributed $15 million, as did Brazil. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10. Audiences watched, they just didn’t rave.
What came next for the cast
Dwayne Johnson went from Jumanji and Furious 7 to Red One and The Smashing Machine. Noah Centineo pivoted from To All the Boys I've Loved Before to Dream Scenario and Warfare. Sarah Shahi moved from Chicago Fire to Red, White & Royal Blue. These shifts mark a clear change in trajectory for each actor. The film did not cause the pivot. It simply happened before it.
