What kind of watch this is
Sam Mendes directs a 148-minute thriller where the stakes feel less like a personal vendetta and more like a bureaucratic nightmare. The tagline reads "The Dead Are Alive," which sounds ominous until you realize it is mostly about paperwork and explosions. It is a film that trusts its audience to notice the architecture of a car chase. It is long, loud, and strangely deliberate.
What the critics said
The reviews land in the middle, which feels appropriate for a Bond film. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 63% approval rating as of January 2026, with an average score of 6.4 out of 10. Metacritic sits at 60, signaling mixed or average reception. Critics were divided on the execution. Mark Kermode noted it failed to match Skyfall's standard. Scott Mendelson called it the worst 007 movie in 30 years.
How it did with audiences
Spectre cost $245 million and took $881 million worldwide. That gap is enough to keep the lights on, even if the margin feels thin. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.6 out of 10. The score is solid, not spectacular. It did the job.
What came next for the cast
Craig traded the suit for a detective coat, moving from Skyfall to Knives Out. Fiennes left the wizarding world behind, stepping into The Menu and The King's Man. Waltz navigated the gap between Tarzan and Alita. Seydoux shifted from The Grand Budapest Hotel to Dune: Part Two. These careers moved in different directions. The timeline does not assign blame. It just records the next job.
