What kind of watch this is

Guy Hamilton directs this 1964 entry in the Bond saga with a tone that treats high-stakes espionage like a heist gone slightly wrong. At 110 minutes, it moves with the confidence of a man who knows exactly what he is doing. The villain, played by Gert Fröbe, is a tycoon whose plan to crash the global economy feels less like world domination and more like a very expensive hobby. It is a film where the stakes are absurdly high, but the execution remains dryly competent.

What the critics said

Critics largely agreed the film works, even if they couldn't all agree on why. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 99% Tomatometer score as of January 2026 and an average review rating of 8.6/10 as of October 2021. Metacritic assigns it a Metascore of 87/100 as of January 2026. Derek Prouse of The Sunday Times called the film "superbly engineered," while Bosley Crowther in The New York Times found the gadget reliance "tediously apparent." Crowther did concede that Sean Connery plays the hero with "an insultingly cool, commanding air." It is rare for a movie to be called both "superbly engineered" and "tediously apparent" in the same breath, but apparently that is the price of entry for a Bond film.

How it did with audiences

A $3 million budget against $51 million in the United States and $125 million worldwide. That is a ratio that makes accountants smile and studios sign the next check without blinking. Audiences tracked the momentum on TMDB, where users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The numbers tell the story of a film that never really left the charts.

What came next for the cast

Sean Connery arrived from Dr. No and From Russia with Love and left for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, The Untouchables, and The Rock. That is a significant change in genre. Gert Fröbe came from The Longest Day and moved on to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Honor Blackman shifted from A Night to Remember and Jason and the Argonauts to Bridget Jones’s Diary and Cockneys vs Zombies. The credits do not claim this movie caused those turns. They merely list what followed.
