What kind of watch this is
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a 2024 action-comedy where the blue blur teams up with Knuckles and Tails to stop Shadow. Keanu Reeves plays the new villain, a hedgehog with powers that make the hero look like a side character. Jim Carrey returns as the mad scientist, playing both the present-day Ivo and the older Gerald. The film runs 110 minutes, which is long enough to forget why a blue cartoon animal is chasing a live-action actor through a city.
What the critics said
Critics agreed on the fun, even if they disagreed on the depth. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 85% as of August 2025, with 151 reviews leaning positive. Metacritic is more reserved, landing on 56 out of 100 in October 2025, a score that signals mixed or average reception. The website's consensus reads: "With a double helping of Jim Carrey's antics and a quicksilver pace befitting its hero, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the best entry in this amiable series yet." The A.V. Club’s Matt Donato noted Reeves added "stoic somberness" to the cast. Not everyone was convinced. The Guardian’s Andrew Pulver suggested the film would have been "a lot, lot worse" without Carrey, a backhanded compliment that stings a little.
How it did with audiences
It cost $122 million and took in $236 million in the US and Canada, with a worldwide total of $492 million. On TMDB, users rate it 7.6 out of 10. Deadline calculated a net profit of $123.6 million, ranking it tenth among 2024's most valuable blockbusters.
What came next for the cast
Keanu Reeves kept hitting the ground, moving from John Wick to Ballerina. Idris Elba seemed to multiply, jumping from Avengers to Masters of the Universe. Ben Schwartz sat quietly between them. The credits do not prove the movie caused this momentum. They simply list what arrived next.
