What kind of watch this is
Brian De Palma directs this 98-minute horror-thriller. It is a film about the specific, crushing weight of being watched. Sissy Spacek plays a girl whose quiet existence curdles into a disaster of her own making. The tension comes from the audience’s inability to look away. You know the ending is coming, but the way it arrives still lands with a physical jolt. It is a masterclass in making the viewer complicit in the violence. The prom scene does not just shock; it implicates.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 94% Tomatometer score as of January 2026, alongside an 8.3/10 average from rated reviews. Metacritic landed on 86 out of 100. The scores are high enough to suggest the film aged well, or at least that the data was updated. No named critics are quoted in the provided facts. The absence of dissent is notable.
How it did with audiences
The budget was $2 million. The United States box office figure stands at $34 million. That is a ratio that makes accountants feel something other than fear. On TMDB, users rate it 7.3 out of 10. The numbers suggest the audience forgave the horror and embraced the spectacle.
What came next for the cast
Sissy Spacek moved from Badlands to a long stretch of genre work, including The Ring Two and JFK, before landing in The Help. Piper Laurie left The Hustler behind, resurfacing years later in Twin Peaks. The credits list what came after. They do not explain why.
