What kind of watch this is
Shrek the Third is a 2007 animated fantasy about an ogre who wants to abdicate the throne to go back to his swamp. It runs 93 minutes and centers on Shrek and Donkey searching for another heir. The hook is the refusal of the crown. Most films about rulership are about earning it. This one is about escaping it. That tension makes the royal politics feel surprisingly personal. It is a movie about a man who would rather live in peace and quiet than sign paperwork.
What the critics said
Mixed reviews landed on Shrek the Third, though not uniformly. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 41% approval rating as of January 2025, while Metacritic holds it at 58/100 as of December 2024. The critical consensus notes pop culture jokes arrive at the expense of the heart and wit that defined the first two films. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave it a B+, the lowest grade in the franchise.
Some critics struggled with the target demographic. Carina Chocano of the Los Angeles Times asked if a kids' movie really needs a Hooters joke. David Ansen of Newsweek described it as a movie at war with itself, a kiddie film that doesn't want to be one.
How it did with audiences
Shrek the Third cost $160 million and took in $804 million worldwide. In the United States, it grossed $323 million. Audiences on TMDB rate it 6.3 out of 10. The numbers suggest people paid to see a king retire, a task that required a certain amount of willpower.
What came next for the cast
Mike Myers shifted from Austin Powers to Inglourious Basterds, while Eddie Murphy traded Beverly Hills Cop for Tower Heist. Cameron Diaz moved from The Mask to Knight and Day, and Antonio Banderas stepped away from Philadelphia toward Uncharted. The credits list what followed, not why. They simply record the next stop.
