Aaron Horvath directs a 93-minute animated adventure that treats a Brooklyn plumbing job as the gateway to a fantasy realm. Chris Pratt voices Mario, while Charlie Day plays his brother Luigi. The premise is simple: the brothers get separated, and Mario goes looking for him. It runs on the energy of a Saturday morning cartoon that never quite leaves its lane. It is just trying to keep your attention for an hour and a half, which is a harder task than it looks.

Critics were lukewarm, to put it mildly. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 59% as of October 2024. Metacritic lands on 46 out of 100, a score that usually implies "average" or "meh." CinemaScore polled audiences and got an A, which is less of a surprise. Ross Bonaime of Collider saw a spiritual cousin to Wreck-It Ralph. Zaki Hasan of the San Francisco Chronicle called it "a blandly efficient piece of brand management.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie spent $100 million and returned $1.3 billion worldwide. That gap defines a blockbuster, though the math is rarely this tidy. In the United States, it pulled in $574 million. TMDB users rate it 7.6 out of 10. It became the first video game adaptation to cross the $1 billion mark.
What came next for the cast
Chris Pratt traded Marvel for sci-fi, with The Electric State and Mercy following. Anya Taylor-Joy moved from thriller roles to Furiosa and The Gorge. Jack Black, fresh off two Jumanji films, pivoted to A Minecraft Movie and Anaconda. Charlie Day went from Pacific Rim to Honey Don't!. The credits do not prove this film caused those shifts.
