What kind of watch this is

Jean-Jacques Annaud directs a 1997 adventure drama that runs 136 minutes. Brad Pitt plays Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountaineer who escapes a POW camp and reaches Lhasa. There he befriends the 14-year-old Dalai Lama, played by Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk. The film is not about climbing peaks. It is about the quiet, stubborn work of letting someone else change your mind. It moves at the pace of a long conversation, not a chase. The landscape is vast, but the story is intimate. It asks what happens when a man who wants to conquer the world meets a boy who has already found it.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 58% approval rating, a number that suggests polite confusion rather than enthusiasm. Metacritic lands on 55, which it translates as mixed or average. The site’s consensus calls the story “stolid,” a word that usually precedes a yawn. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it 2.5 stars, noting it is “more concerned with their adventures than with what they discover.” Derek Elley of Variety wanted the movie to “cut loose from the ethnography.” The film asks for patience. It delivers scenery instead.

How it did with audiences

The production burned through $70 million. It returned $132 million. Viewers are less generous than the accountants. A TMDB user score sits at 7.2, while IMDb places it at 7.1/10 as of February 2026. The consensus is that the money was spent, but not necessarily well.

What came next for the cast

For Brad Pitt, the post-Tibet years brought Fight Club and later Deadpool 2. David Thewlis found a new home in the wizarding world, eventually landing three major roles in the Harry Potter franchise. BD Wong returned to the dinosaur park, appearing in Jurassic World and its sequel. The credits suggest the film did not cause these trajectories. They simply mark where the roads diverged.
