What kind of watch this is
Scream 2 takes the killer from a quiet suburb to a crowded college campus. That single move changes the texture of the horror. Instead of isolated victims, you have a mob. The Ghostface costume becomes a face in the crowd, which is far more terrifying than a figure in the dark. Wes Craven keeps the meta-commentary on film tropes, but the stakes feel higher because the audience is no longer alone. It is 120 minutes of looking over your shoulder while everyone else is just trying to pass a class. The sequel does not need to outdo the original to be effective; it just needs to make you afraid of the lecture hall.

Rotten Tomatoes reports an 83% approval rating based on 133 reviews, alongside a 6.9/10 average. Metacritic lists a 62 Metascore, which it categorizes as generally favorable. The consensus calls the film a gleeful takedown of scary movie conventions. Janet Maslin of The New York Times noted the film is so sharp that no pretty young things absolutely had to die. Roger Ebert called it about as good as the original, though he felt the extra gore distracted from the witty screenplay. Some critics noted the new characters lacked the depth of the first film's cast.
How it did with audiences
It cost $24 million and took $172 million worldwide, a result that puts it nearly on par with the first film despite a rushed production and script rewrites. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5 out of 10. It was the 21st highest-grossing film of 1997, which is a solid place to land when competing against giants.
What came next for the cast
Courteney Cox and David Arquette arrived with the momentum of Friends and Buffy respectively. They left with a franchise that would swallow them whole for decades. Neve Campbell had The Craft behind her; she got Skyscraper ahead. Jerry O’Connell went from Jerry Maguire to Piranha 3D. The credits show the path, not the cause.
