RoboCop (1987)

Part man, part machine, all cop.

In a violent, near-apocalyptic Detroit, evil corporation Omni Consumer Products wins a contract from the city government to privatize the police force. To test their crime-eradicating cyborgs, the company leads street cop Alex Murphy into an armed confrontation with crime lord Boddicker so they can use his body to support their untested RoboCop prototype. But when RoboCop learns of the company's nefarious plans, he turns on his masters.

What kind of watch this is

Paul Verhoeven directs a 102-minute science fiction thriller that treats corporate greed with the same cold precision as a bullet. The film relies on a visual gag where a man’s body is repurposed for a weapon, yet it somehow avoids becoming a simple satire. The humor is dry, the violence is stylized, and the corporate logo is front and center. It is a sharp, cynical look at how profit motive can override human decency, wrapped in a suit that looks like it came from a department store.

What the critics said

Critics mostly liked it, though they argued about why. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 84% as of April 2026, with a 8.1 average from its rated reviews. Metacritic lands on 70. The Washington Post saw sharp social satire that might have been a simple action movie in other hands. Dave Kehr of the Chicago Reader disagreed, finding the direction overwrought and lacking momentum. He called the lead’s presence a failure to exploit the character's "Aryan blandness." The film built a futuristic Detroit that felt as distinct as Blade Runner’s Los Angeles. It is a movie that is either a masterpiece or a mess, depending on who you ask.

How it did with audiences

Costing $13 million, RoboCop earned $53 million in the United States. The worldwide figure matches the domestic one, a statistical quirk that likely reflects missing international data rather than a global travel ban. Audiences at the time seemed to agree with the math. On TMDB, users rate it 7.4 out of 10. IMDb gives it a 7.6/10 as of February 2026. It wasn’t a blockbuster, but it wasn’t a failure, either.
