What kind of watch this is
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is a 107-minute action-horror film where the apocalypse has already happened, but the paperwork is still pending. Alice returns to the Hive, the place where the nightmare started, because Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for one last strike. The tagline is "Evil comes home," which is less a promise and more a warning about property values. It is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, who clearly believes the best way to end a story is to make it louder.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 38% as of January 2026, with a 4.5/10 audience average from October 2021. Metacritic lands on 49, a number that usually means "mixed or average." The critical consensus calls it "mind-numbingly chaotic for the unconverted," though fans may find it a fitting conclusion.
Dissent was loud. Alex Welch of IGN gave it 3/10, calling it "a pointless mess." Glenn Kenny of The New York Times wrote, "This is, I think, the weakest picture in the franchise." Critics also noted the absence of Jill, Leon, and Ada, a decision that left some wanting more closure. It is on the site’s 100 Best Zombie Movies list, which is either a testament to its chaos or a statistical anomaly.
How it did with audiences
It cost $40 million and took in $312 million worldwide. That is a healthy margin in Hollywood accounting. In the United States and Canada, it earned $26.8 million. Elsewhere, it pulled in $287.3 million. China did the heavy lifting, contributing $160 million to the total. It opened to $13.9 million in North America, the lowest debut for the franchise. On TMDB, users rate it 6.1 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Milla Jovovich had already anchored the franchise since 2002, but the post-credits era brought sci-fi action like Hellboy and Monster Hunter. Iain Glen came from Game of Thrones and Kick-Ass 2, then moved into Titans and Silo. Ali Larter, known for Final Destination, transitioned to procedural work on The Rookie and Landman. Shawn Roberts, fresh from X-Men, landed a spot in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The credits cannot say this film caused that shift. They can only say what followed.
