What kind of watch this is

Brad Bird directs this 111-minute animation about a rat who wants to cook in a place where rats are the opposite of welcome. The film trades on the absurdity of that premise, letting the comedy grow from the logistics of hiding a tiny chef inside a human head. It is a fantasy that takes its culinary rules seriously, treating a potato as a complex character. The tone is warm but never soft, balancing the high-stakes pressure of a Michelin star with the low-stakes panic of a sewer rat. It is a movie that understands the smell of butter.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes reports a 96% approval rating based on 251 reviews, with an average score of 8.5 out of 10. Metacritic assigns it a 96/100 Metascore, the highest of any Pixar film tied with Toy Story. The consensus is unambiguous. A. O. Scott of The New York Times called it "a nearly flawless piece of popular art." Wally Hammond of Time Out echoed the praise, noting it is a "delightful addition to the Pixar pantheon." Dissent was rare. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a B, arguing it has the technical magic but lacks the full flavor. A perfectly good meal, one might say, just not the main event.

How it did with audiences

It cost $150 million and pulled in $624 million worldwide. In North America, it took $206 million, though its opening weekend of $47.2 million was the lowest Pixar debut since A Bug's Life. Audiences seem to agree with the accounting, awarding it a 7.8 TMDB user score. The numbers suggest people enjoyed the rat, even if the studio likely expected more from a food-based plot.

Awards

Ratatouille took home 4 awards from 6 nominations. The Academy Award for Best Animated Feature went to Brad Bird. It also picked up the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature, the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Animated Feature, and the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Animated Movie. A rat winning a chef’s award is a premise we should all accept at face value.

What came next for the cast

Before Ratatouille, Patton Oswalt was known for roles in Zoolander and Blade: Trinity. After, he appeared in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Ian Holm had just played a role in The Lord of the Rings. He later returned to that world for The Hobbit, then appeared in Alien: Romulus. Brian Dennehy moved from First Blood to The Blacklist. These shifts do not prove the film changed their paths. They just mark where the credits landed next.
