What kind of watch this is
Preacher is a 4-season series that takes a small-town pastor and hands him the power to literally go after God. It runs 43 episodes and clocks in at 32 hours of watching a man get absolutely lost in a metaphysical mess. The tone is a weird mix of biblical epic and buddy comedy, driven by Jesse Custer’s total lack of patience. Dominic Cooper plays the preacher, Ruth Negga is his gun-toting ex, and Joseph Gilgun is the Irish vampire who just wants a drink. It is a long walk into the absurd, but it never looks away from the mess it makes.
What the critics said
The reviews were solid, which is saying something for a show about a preacher who punches demons. Rotten Tomatoes rates the first season at 89% based on 243 reviews. Metacritic scores it 76 out of 100, a number that implies general favor rather than rapturous worship. Eric Goldman of IGN liked the pilot’s blend of horror and comedy, noting the excellent casting. The second season climbed to 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the third hit 92%. The fourth season dipped to 77%, with critics noting the show was running out of steam. The gore stayed constant; the patience did not.
How it did with audiences
Preacher skipped the box office entirely, so we have no ticket sales to dissect. The only hard number is a 7.4 TMDB user score. That is solid approval, not a riot. Fans liked the show enough to give it a good grade, which is all we can say without revenue data.
What came next for the cast
Dominic Cooper traded Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Mamma Mia! (2008) for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and The Princess (2022). The sequel logic holds. Ruth Negga stepped away from World War Z (2013) and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) to land roles in Ad Astra (2019), Passing (2021), and Presumed Innocent (2024). She found the quiet room. Credits do not prove cause. They just mark the door.
