Ryder, a 10-year-old who treats technology like a magic wand, dispatches Marshall, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma, and Skye to handle whatever goes wrong in their town. Each pup brings specific gear to the table, turning every 12-minute episode into a structured rescue mission. With 14 seasons and 578 episodes, the series totals roughly 116 hours of content. That is a lot of time spent watching dogs in uniforms solve logistical puzzles. It is optimistic to the point of being strange.
What the critics said
Critics split on the show. Common Sense Media’s Emily Ashby gave it 4 stars, praising its "thoughtful problem-solving". DVD Talk’s Randy Miller called it "packed with... cornball jokes". Not everyone agreed. Stuff.co.nz’s Pattie Pegler found some characters "rather arbitrary". The About Group’s Carey Bryson deemed it "formulaic", though not without funny moments. A 2016 Sky study reported 16% of British and Irish children named it their favorite. Critics later flagged the initial gender imbalance, which writers fixed by adding Everest in season 2. A 2018 University of Michigan study accused its mobile app of manipulating young viewers. Liam Kennedy’s 2020 paper argued the show echoes "core tenets of neoliberalism".
How it did with audiences
The box office ledger is empty, so we look to the living room instead. TMDB users give it a 7. That number sits comfortably, but the real story is in the preschool demographics. Nickelodeon executives named it a key driver of their 2014 ratings growth. It held the top spot for US preschool TV through spring 2014, a title it briefly lost and then reclaimed in 2016. Bloomberg called it part of a channel-wide creative resurgence. In France, 45% of households with preschoolers tuned in. Kids don’t do arithmetic, but their parents do.
