Parks and Recreation (2009)
Because parks don't grow on trees.
In an attempt to beautify her town — and advance her career — Leslie Knope, a mid-level bureaucrat in the Parks and Recreation Department of Pawnee, Indiana, takes on bureaucrats, cranky neighbors, and single-issue fanatics whose weapons are lawsuits, the jumble of city codes, and the democratic process she loves so much.

What kind of watch this is
Leslie Knope treats local government like a personal mission, which is either inspiring or a cry for help. Created by Michael Schur and Greg Daniels, the series runs 122 episodes across 7 seasons. That is roughly 45 hours of bureaucratic passion. The humor relies on the gap between her genuine enthusiasm and the reality of city hall. It finds joy in the mundane details of public service. The characters feel like people you might actually know, minus the soul-crushing meetings. It is a warm, dry look at how ordinary people navigate the strange machinery of local power.
What the critics said
The first season started with a credibility problem. Leaked focus group notes in 2009 called the pilot a "carbon copy" of The Office. Critics echoed that skepticism, landing the debut season at a Metacritic score of 58. They called Knope too similar to Michael Scott and the tone too mean. The turn happened by season two, which scored 71. Steve Heisler of The A.V. Club noted that after the second season, "it somehow got even better." Henry Hanks of CNN called the third season "a near-flawless season.
How it did with audiences
The series premiere drew 6.88 million viewers, a number outlets called strong. Then the numbers fell. By the finale, only 4.29 million were watching. The first season averaged 5.97 million, ranking 94th among 193 network shows. NBC’s primetime slot had shrunk after Jay Leno moved to a 10:00 pm variety show. Stress set in when renewal looked unlikely. The second season averaged 4.6 million, trailing Community, 30 Rock, and The Office. The ratings said no. The critics said yes.
