What kind of watch this is
A former Jedi Master hides on a desert planet, watching over an orphan while the Empire hunts him. When a new threat forces him out, he must face the man he failed. The series runs 5 hours total, which is a manageable amount of time to spend worrying about a lightsaber duel. It leans into the weight of that failure, letting the tension build before the violence hits. The stakes feel personal because the hero is already broken. It is a quiet, tense look at a man trying to fix a mistake that destroyed a galaxy.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 82%, with an average score of 6.60/10 from 356 reviews. Metacritic lands on 73 out of 100, a weighted average that signals general approval. The consensus notes the series is satisfying, if circuitous, thanks to Ewan McGregor’s soulful performance. Matt Purslow of IGN called it "a surprisingly emotional chapter," though he poked at the action sequences. Stuart Heritage of The Guardian gave the first two episodes 3 out of 5 stars, praising the second episode's John Wick-like pacing but finding the first too slow. Not everyone bought in. Dominic Patten of Deadline Hollywood dismissed the early episodes as "nearly all undiluted nostalgia.
How it did with audiences
Disney declared it the most-watched series premiere in its opening weekend, a claim that feels less like a statistic and more like a marketing victory. Whip Media, tracking over 25 million users, labeled it the most anticipated new series of May 2022. The hype held up. Samba TV noted "Part I" reached 2.14 million U.S. households, edging out The Mandalorian’s second season. By the finale, 1.8 million households tuned in, a 20% jump over The Book of Boba Fett’s finale. On TMDB, users give it a 7 out of 10.
