What kind of watch this is

Jon M. Chu directs this 129-minute crime thriller, which picks up one year after the first film. The Four Horsemen, including Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, and Woody Harrelson, have outwitted the FBI and won the public’s adulation. Now a new enemy enlists them to pull off their most dangerous heist yet. The premise is simple: they do the thing, the stakes get higher, and the trick gets bigger. It is a movie that trusts you to enjoy the mechanics of a con without demanding emotional depth. The tagline promises you haven't seen anything yet. You have seen plenty, but this version is louder.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 34% Tomatometer score and a 4.9/10 average rating as of January 2026. Metacritic lands on 46, which it labels mixed or average. The consensus notes the film packs in more twists but hides less. Dissent exists, though it is quiet. Some preferred this sequel to the original, finding it more fun despite the implausible plotting. The real story is the cast swap. Lizzy Caplan replaced Isla Fisher, and critics noticed. Entertainment Weekly called her one of the sequel’s biggest improvements. She brings a sassy energy to a boy’s club.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $120 million, and the film took in $335 million worldwide. In accounting terms, that is a win. In magic terms, it is a modest trick. It opened alongside Warcraft and The Conjuring 2, landing third behind both. China was the biggest territory, generating $97.1 million. Users on TMDB rate it 6.8 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Mark Ruffalo went from the first Avengers to two more, plus Thor. Woody Harrelson traded Hunger Games for Venom, and later Three Billboards. Jesse Eisenberg moved into Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Zombieland: Double Tap. Dave Franco followed with 6 Underground and The Disaster Artist. The sequence does not prove the magic trick caused the trajectory. It just shows where they went after the curtain closed.
