What kind of watch this is

No Time to Die runs 163 minutes, a duration that suggests patience the film rarely exhibits. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, it takes a Bond who has quit and drags him back for a rescue mission that spirals into a tech-fueled catastrophe. The tone is less about suave charm and more about the weight of a life that cannot be left behind. It is a loud, kinetic affair where the action scenes compete with the drama for your attention. The villain, played by Rami Malek, brings a menace that feels personal rather than just global. You do not watch it for the gadgets; you watch it to see how much damage one last mission can do.

What the critics said

Critics mostly liked it. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 83% as of November 2022, with a 7.3 average from its rated reviews. Metacritic is less generous, landing on 68 out of 100 as of February 2025, which it calls generally favorable. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it "an epic barnstormer". Kevin Maher of The Times went further, saying "It's better than good. It's magnificent". Not everyone agreed. John Nugent of Empire criticized the 2 hours and 43 minutes of runtime, specifically the plotting in the middle third. A long film needs every minute to earn its keep.

How it did with audiences

The budget was $250 million, but the combined production and promotional costs hit at least $350 million. That math meant the film needed to gross at least $800 million worldwide just to break even. It finished at $774.2 million, a short fall that might seem like a failure until you remember the pandemic had just ended. It was the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2021, a title that feels less like a victory and more like a consolation prize for surviving the lockdowns. TMDB users rate it 7.3 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Lashana Lynch stepped from Captain Marvel into a Marvel-heavy run, while Rami Malek moved from Bohemian Rhapsody to Oppenheimer. The credits do not claim the Bond film caused those shifts. They simply record what followed. Léa Seydoux traded The Grand Budapest Hotel for Dune: Part Two and The Second Act. Craig kept returning to Rian Johnson’s mysteries. The group’s paths diverged, but the timeline is just a timeline.
