What kind of watch this is
Naruto Shippūden is an animated action-adventure series that leans heavily into sci-fi and fantasy territory. It is a long commitment, running 500 episodes across 20 seasons. That totals roughly 208 hours of viewing time. If you have the stamina, it is built for anyone who wants to watch a ninja grow from a troublemaker into a warrior. The premise is simple enough: Naruto returns to his village after a break to face the Akatsuki. It is not a light watch. It is a marathon.
What the critics said
Critics focused less on scores and more on style. Mike Hale of The New York Times called the anime much better than American children’s shows. Visuals drew mixed reactions. Christina Carpenter of THEM Anime Reviews said Kishimoto’s art translated poorly, while Derrick Tucker found the best moments left little to be desired. Fight scenes sparked debate. Theron Martin of Anime News Network found them excessive. Justin Rich argued they were the show’s most enjoyable element. Charles Solomon of the Los Angeles Times ranked it the third-best anime on his list.
How it did with audiences
Naruto Shippūden skipped the box office entirely, so there is no ticket price to scrutinize. The only metric we have is a 8.5 TMDB user score. Viewers apparently liked it enough to leave a high mark, which is a solid endorsement for a long-running anime. The numbers are sparse, but the enthusiasm is not.
