That single change sets the tone for a film that treats cosmic mechanics as a suggestion rather than a law. Halle Berry plays Jocinda Fowler. Patrick Wilson is Brian Harper. John Bradley is KC Houseman. The tagline promises the dark side of the Moon. The film delivers it with the subtlety of a hurricane. It is a movie that believes spectacle is the only language it speaks.
What the critics said
Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 35% approval rating from 217 reviews. Metacritic gives it a 41 out of 100, a score that lands squarely in the mixed or average range. The consensus admits the film is an Emmerich disaster thriller through and through. Neil deGrasse Tyson, who appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, claimed Moonfall broke more laws of physics per minute than Armageddon. That is a specific kind of failure, and apparently a record-worthy one.
How it did with audiences
Moonfall earned $19.1 million in the United States and Canada, plus $48.2 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $67.3 million. It opened at number 2 domestically with $9.9 million, then dropped 70% the following week. China was a bright spot, debuting at number 1 despite pandemic closures. On TMDB, users rate it 6.3 out of 10.
