Armageddon (1998)

For love. For honor. For mankind.

When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J. who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise.

What kind of watch this is

Michael Bay directed this 151-minute entry in the Action, Science Fiction, and Adventure genres. It pairs a space mission with a nuclear blast, a combination that defies both physics and common sense. Bruce Willis plays the renowned driller who recruits his own crew, while Billy Bob Thornton handles the NASA honcho role. Ben Affleck provides the cocksure young man who needs to prove himself. The film does not care if you notice the logic gaps, because the explosions are loud enough to drown them out. It is a loud, fast, and strangely affectionate mess of a movie.

What the critics said

Critics were not kind. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 43% Tomatometer score as of August 2024, while Metacritic sits at 42 out of 100 as of July 2025. The consensus is blunt: the film is visually loud but intellectually vacant. Roger Ebert called it an "assault on the eyes, the ears, the brain," which is a fair warning for anyone with a pulse. Others, like Gene Siskel, found the chaos amusing. The editing gets specific blame; Todd McCarthy described it as a machine gun stuck in the firing position. It is a movie that trusts volume to replace plot, a strategy that works only if you enjoy being pummeled.

How it did with audiences

$140 million in, $554 million out. That is a healthy margin for a movie about blasting a rock with nukes. It took $202 million in the United States, landing it as the year’s highest-grossing film worldwide, though it sat just behind Saving Private Ryan stateside. TMDB users rate it 6.8 out of 10. Audiences liked the spectacle enough to keep the receipts coming.

What came next for the cast

Bruce Willis traded action leads for Sixth Sense twists. Liv Tyler stepped into Middle-earth. Ben Affleck walked into the DC Universe. The credits list these shifts; they do not claim Armageddon caused them. Careers are not linear graphs. Sometimes they are just a series of doors that open in unpredictable directions.
