The numbers tell a story of polite confusion. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 65% as of 2024, while Metacritic rests at 59 out of 100 as of 2025. It is the score of a meal that is technically well-cooked but emotionally vacant. Roger Ebert gave it 3 out of 4 stars, arguing we must exist in the instant to enjoy it. Hal Hinson in The Washington Post disagreed, finding empty thrills and no personality. Critics often praised the break-in and final chase, scenes that survived the rest of the film’s mixed reputation.

Emmanuelle Béart shifted from Manon of the Spring to 8 Women. Henry Czerny went from Clear and Present Danger to The A-Team. The film did not cause these shifts. It merely sat in the middle of a long stretch of varied choices.
