What kind of watch this is
Christopher McQuarrie directs a 147-minute action film where the stakes feel genuinely lethal. Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, has to clean up a disaster that threatens the entire planet while the CIA decides if he is a hero or a traitor. The movie trusts its audience to keep up. It does not pause to explain the physics of a skydive or the logic of a car crash. It just keeps moving. Henry Cavill plays August Walker, and Ving Rhames is Luther Stickell. What the critics said
Critics treated Fallout with a respect usually reserved for arthouse cinema, not spy blockbusters. Rotten Tomatoes reported 98% positive reviews from 444 critics, while Metacritic sits at 87 out of 100 based on 60 reviews. It wasn't just good; it was the highest-rated entry in the franchise. Brian Tallerico and David Ehrlich both called it one of the best action films ever made, a comparison that lands harder when you know the bar includes Mad Max: Fury Road. The action set pieces drew specific praise, though some found the violence excessive.
How it did with audiences
It spent $178 million and pulled in $220 million in the United States, a modest domestic return that ballooned to $792 million worldwide. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. IMDb audiences give it a 7.7 out of 10 as of June 2026. The numbers suggest the audience did the math before the studio did, deciding that the action was worth the ticket price.
