What kind of watch this is

Matthew Weiner built a drama where the suit matters more than the soul. It is 74 hours of watching people lie beautifully. The 1960s backdrop is a costume party for existential dread. Don Draper’s double life is the engine, but the room he works in is the real antagonist. It feels less like a period piece and more like a slow burn that never quite catches, just smolders. The dialogue is sharp enough to cut glass. It is a 92-episode masterclass in how to make advertising look like a religion. You will want to smoke a cigarette while you watch.

What the critics said

The numbers are consistent, if you like numbers. Metacritic tracked the scores season by season: 77, then 88, 87, 92, 89, 88, 85, and 83. The AFI picked it for its top 10 list in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014, then gave it a special nod in 2015. It was the most acclaimed show on Metacritic’s aggregate lists in 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. A New York Times reviewer called it groundbreaking for "luxuriating in the not-so-distant past." Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe saw "an absolutely gorgeous, amber-tinted vision." The Washington Post liked the look but found the pacing lethargic.

How it did with audiences

TMDB users score it 8.1 out of 10. With no box office to track, the measure is the living room. The July 2007 premiere drew 1.65 million viewers, a record for AMC originals at the time. That number more than doubled for the second season debut, though a subsequent drop sparked some nervous chatter. The second season finale pulled 1.75 million, up 20% from the season average. By 2009, it ranked second in Nielsen’s timeshifted list. Ratings climbed, one season at a time.

What came next for the cast

Elisabeth Moss moved from Girl, Interrupted to The Handmaid’s Tale. Jon Hamm traded Space Cowboys for Top Gun: Maverick. January Jones went from American Wedding to X-Men: First Class. Vincent Kartheiser swapped Angel for Titans. The credits list the destinations. They do not prove the show built the bridge. Sometimes a role just opens a door.

Where it left its mark

Mad Men did more than win awards; it changed what cable could be. AMC, a channel previously known for other things, used the show's success to fund a slate of prestige dramas, a shift critics often cite as the start of Peak TV. It was the first basic cable series to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, winning it four times. That level of recognition gave other networks the nerve to follow suit. The show’s influence is visible in a long list of imitators, from Trust Me to The Hour, and even sent a Frank O'Hara poem into the bestsellers list.
