What kind of watch this is
Noah Hawley’s 2017 series treats a superpower origin story as a psychiatric case study. David Haller spends years in and out of hospitals, convinced his voices are symptoms. They are not. The show runs 23 hours across 3 seasons, a commitment that feels necessary when the stakes involve a parasite eating your brain from the inside. It is 50 minutes per episode, which is enough time to get lost in the static.
What the critics said
Critics gave the first season a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 8.45 out of 10. Metacritic scored it 82, a mark it files under universal acclaim. Ben Travers of IndieWire graded it an A, calling it "the most intricate, intimate superhero story." The second season held strong at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and scored 85 on Metacritic. David Fear of Rolling Stone called it "the most mindblowing show on TV," noting it pushes genre boundaries until they shatter. The consensus is that it works. Which is rare for a show about a man with too many hands.
How it did with audiences
TMDB users rate the series 7.5 out of 10. There is no box office data, so the verdict rests on reception. Writing for Screen Rant, J.M. Brandt noted FX advertised it heavily but debuted the 90-minute premiere at 10:00 pm on a Wednesday, later than hits like Game of Thrones. Brandt felt success would depend on DVR viewing to bolster a likely smallish live audience. Debut ratings were described as "OK, not great," in line with other cable debuts but lower than American Crime Story or Fargo. The air was thin, but the signal got through.
