What kind of watch this is
Heroes is a 2006 sci-fi drama where ordinary people realize they have super powers. The tagline says you cannot choose your family, but you can choose a side. Tim Kring created a 4-season series that runs 56 hours total. It is a 78-episode commitment that assumes you have a flexible relationship with your free time.
What the critics said
Critics called season one a triumph. The American Film Institute named it one of the ten best television programs of the year. Doug Elfman of the Chicago Sun-Times found "well-developed filmmaking" and "smooth pacing" that viewed like a thoughtful movie. Barry Garron at The Hollywood Reporter called it one of TV's most imaginative creations. Dissent existed. The Philadelphia Inquirer said it lands in a pile of nonsense. The Chicago Tribune suggested watching it might feel like hitting your head with a brick. The pilot scored 67 out of 100 on Metacritic, a generally favorable mark.
Season two drew less cheer. Critics and fans noted a slower pace and less engaging storyline. Creator Tim Kring admitted the season took too long to reach the big picture. He believed viewers wanted adrenaline, not character discovery. The ratings dipped 15%. Kring conceded he should have resolved the Japan arc faster and that the romances were not working well. He saw more convincing pairings on television.
How it did with audiences
The pilot drew 14.3 million viewers. The season high hit 16.03 million during episode 9. When the series returned from its January 2007 hiatus, it averaged 14.9 million. A second hiatus in spring 2007 saw ratings dip to a low of 11.14 million.
TMDB users rate it 7.4 out of 10. The numbers tell a story of a show that started loud and faded quietly, one episode at a time.
