What kind of watch this is
M. Night Shyamalan directs this 100-minute horror thriller, which trades jump scares for moral paralysis. The hook is not the four armed strangers holding a family hostage in a remote cabin. It is the impossible arithmetic of their demand. The film asks you to weigh one family against the entire species, then forces you to sit in the silence of that calculation. It is less about who pulls the trigger and more about why you hesitate to pull it at all.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes landed at 67% by September 2023, a figure that suggests more fans than detractors. Metacritic, which counts 60 critics, gave it 63 out of 100 in October 2025, a score that leans toward favorable. The split isn't deep. Some saw a contained, efficient thriller; others saw a self-serious mess. M.N. Miller called it "an exceptionally made thriller with satisfying flaws to pick at and debate." Nick Allen found it "frustrating and self-serious," suggesting Shyamalan stay away from the apocalypse. The audience grade was a C.
How it did with audiences
It cost $20 million and made $54.8 million worldwide, a return that keeps the lights on without buying anyone a yacht. In the United States and Canada, it took in $35.4 million, while other territories added $19.4 million. It opened to $14.2 million, knocking Avatar: The Way of Water off the top spot. TMDB users rate it 6.2 out of 10. The numbers suggest a solid mid-tier hit, the kind that satisfies the accountants and the algorithm.
What came next for the cast
Dave Bautista moved from Avengers: Infinity War and Guardians of the Galaxy to Dune: Part Two, The Naked Gun, and The Wrecking Crew. Nikki Amuka-Bird went from Jupiter Ascending and Old to Here. The gap between those two paths is the whole point. One name fills every trailer; the other waits for the right room. Casting is not a linear chart. It is a series of doors, some loud, some quiet.
