What kind of watch this is

La Brea drops a sinkhole into downtown Los Angeles, swallowing buildings and residents into a prehistoric underworld. It is a 23-hour commitment across 30 episodes, which is enough time to forget you are watching a sci-fi drama and remember you are watching a family drama that happens to have dinosaurs. The hook is not the monsters; it is the logistics of survival when your spouse is on the other side of a geological anomaly. David Appelbaum’s creation trades on the classic disaster trope, then asks what remains of a marriage when the ground literally gives way.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 29%. Metacritic is slightly more generous, landing on 49 out of 100. The consensus is that the show does not commit to its premise hard enough. The Globe and Mail called it "gripping in its awfulness." Meanwhile, The Guardian found it "gloriously, brazenly bad," though they still managed to give it one star. It is a tale of two reviews, both agreeing on the disaster, disagreeing on the fun.

How it did with audiences

La Brea skipped the box office entirely, so there is no ticket revenue to dissect. The only metric on the table is a 7.4 TMDB user score. That number suggests viewers found it engaging enough to rate, even if they did not pour money into theaters. It is a silent success, measured in clicks rather than dollars.
