Metacritic assigns a 62/100 Metascore as of November 2024, a tier that means "generally favorable." The consensus calls it exhilarating eye candy that earns its spot in the mythos without matching the classic original.
Michael Phillips of The Chicago Tribune saw a really good movie where the money bought results. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian was less impressed, calling it fantastically muddled and exasperatingly dull. That is a wide gap for a giant ape to bridge, but the gap is where the fun lives.
