What kind of watch this is
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a 2024 science fiction adventure directed by Wes Ball. It runs 145 minutes, a long time to spend in the shadows. The premise involves a young ape named Noa, played by Owen Teague, who questions his history while a tyrannical leader builds an empire. The tagline claims no one can stop the reign.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports 80% positive reviews from 323 critics as of December 2024. Metacritic sits at 66 out of 100, signaling generally favorable reception. Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times called it "uncommonly thoughtful, even insightful". Ty Burr of The Washington Post found the visuals "breathtakingly hyper-real" but deemed the human characters "two-dimensional". Dissent exists, though. Caryn James of the BBC noted the film feels derivative of its predecessor. It’s a solid entry that justifies its reign without taking the crown.
How it did with audiences
The film opened strong, debuting to $58.4 million in the United States and Canada. That performance secured the third-best opening weekend for the franchise, trailing only the 2014 and 2001 entries. Globally, it grossed $397.4 million against a $160 million budget. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. Audiences voted with their wallets, proving the apes still have a seat at the box office table.
What came next for the cast
Owen Teague arrived here after It and its sequel, then headed toward The Whisper Man. Kevin Durand brought a decade of action roles, from Wolverine to Real Steel, before a flurry of 2025 and 2026 releases. The timeline shows a shift in volume and tone, not a direct causal link. Careers drift.
