It's a jungle in here.

When siblings Judy and Peter discover an enchanted board game that opens the door to a magical world, they unwittingly invite Alan -- an adult who's been trapped inside the game for 26 years -- into their living room. Alan's only hope for freedom is to finish the game, which proves risky as all three find themselves running from giant rhinoceroses, evil monkeys and other terrifying creatures.

What kind of watch this is

Jumanji runs 104 minutes and treats a board game like a trapdoor. Joe Johnston directs a story where a jungle erupts in a suburban living room, driven by Robin Williams playing an adult stranded in the rules for 26 years. He is not a villain, but he is a liability. The film asks if you can handle a world that runs on chaos rather than logic. It works because the stakes are personal, not global. The rhinos are terrifying, but the real tension is trying to win a game you cannot understand. It is a loud, kinetic adventure that respects the audience’s intelligence just enough to let them figure out the rules.

What the critics said

Critics found a movie that looks better than it feels. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 55% as of 2026. Metacritic lands on 39, a number that suggests the visuals did the heavy lifting. The consensus calls it a feast for the eyes with a malnourished plot. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian liked the energy, noting the fantasy "still holds up". Kim Newman of Empire agreed it was fun, but called it a "half-term crowd-pleaser" you’d forget by summer. Roger Ebert was less charmed, arguing the special effects masked a thin story. He worried the imagery would scare young kids, comparing its suitability to Jaws. That is a bold comparison for a board game movie.

How it did with audiences

$65 million in, $263 million out. Jumanji opened at number 1, beating Toy Story to the top spot with an $11 million first weekend. It pulled in $101 million domestically and $162 million overseas. CinemaScore audiences gave it an A−. The math is simple enough to do on a napkin, though the studio probably preferred a spreadsheet.
