What kind of watch this is
Jake Kasdan directs this 119-minute adventure comedy. The hook is simple: four teenagers get trapped in a video game, but they play as bodies that do not match their own. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black perform as those avatars, turning a fantasy quest into a study of people trapped in the wrong skin. It is loud, fast, and committed to its own absurdity. The joke is not that the game is dangerous, but that the players are terrible at it.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes lists a 77% approval rating as of January 2026, based on 235 reviews. Metacritic settles on a 58/100 metascore, a figure that usually signals mixed or average reception. The critical consensus leans on the charm of the cast to carry the plot. Dave White of TheWrap called it a "pleasant surprise" that subverts expectations. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone noted it has "enough star power and comic zest to deliver a fun time ... barely." Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A−".
How it did with audiences
$90 million went in; $962 million came out. That margin makes the math work for a studio that likely expected a modest holiday bump. It took in $404 million domestically and $78 million in China, proving the jungle logic travels. On TMDB, users rate it 6.8 out of 10. Audiences voted with their wallets, if not their hearts.
What came next for the cast
Before 2017, Karen Gillan was in Guardians of the Galaxy and Dwayne Johnson was in Fast & Furious 6. The years that followed kept them in similar orbits. Gillan returned to the Avengers franchise with Infinity War and Endgame, while Johnson leaned into Rampage and Hobbs & Shaw. Kevin Hart moved from This Is the End to Night School, and Jack Black shifted from Tropic Thunder to a very different kind of adventure. These career paths did not diverge because of this specific film. They simply continued their existing momentum.
