Chad Stahelski directs this 170-minute action thriller, and it treats violence as a bureaucratic process. John Wick is no longer just a killer; he is an auditor of the High Table’s power structure. The film stretches its runtime to 170 minutes, which is long enough to make you question your life choices, but short enough to get through before you start crying. It is a love letter to the genre that knows exactly how ridiculous it has become.
What the critics said
Critics mostly agreed that the spectacle held up. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 94% positive score from 374 reviews as of October 2023. Metacritic lists a 78 Metascore based on 58 critics as of August 2025, a solidly favorable mark. Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter called it "bigger, badder, bolder." Not everyone bought the extra volume. Charles Bramesco of The Guardian gave it 2 out of 5 stars, calling it "a lumbering, stultifying gargantuan of a film.
How it did with audiences
The film cost $100 million to make. It earned $138 million worldwide, a modest return that leaves the accountants slightly unconvinced. In the United States, it took in $74 million. Those figures sit comfortably in the TMDB 7.7 user score, which suggests the audience liked it more than the spreadsheet did.
What came next for the cast
Bill Skarsgård emerged from It (2017) and Deadpool 2 (2018) into Nosferatu (2024), The Crow (2024), and Boy Kills World (2024). Keanu Reeves, already familiar to action fans, kept the franchise momentum alive with Ballerina (2025) and Good Fortune (2025). Ian McShane, a veteran of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), joined the continuing universe with Ballerina (2025) and Deep Cover (2025). The films that followed do not prove this title changed their trajectories. They just happened next.
