Jerry Maguire (1996)

Everybody loved him... Everybody disappeared. The journey is everything.

Jerry Maguire used to be a typical sports agent: willing to do just about anything he could to get the biggest possible contracts for his clients, plus a nice commission for himself. Then, one day, he suddenly has second thoughts about what he's really doing. When he voices these doubts, he ends up losing his job and all of his clients, save Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player.

What kind of watch this is

Cameron Crowe directed a 139-minute comedy-drama about a sports agent who decides to quit his job and ends up with one client left. That client is Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player. The film runs long, but the tension between Jerry’s sudden idealism and Rod’s loud confidence keeps it moving. It is a story about finding meaning in the wreckage of a career. The tagline says everybody loved him, then everybody disappeared. The journey is everything.

What the critics said

Critics found the film sturdy, even if the plot felt a bit crowded. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 84% as of January 2026, while Metacritic’s weighted average rests at 77 out of 100, signaling generally favorable reviews. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times noted the movie "starts out looking cynical and quickly becomes a heartwarmer." Todd McCarthy of Variety called it "an exceptionally tasty contempo comedic romance.

How it did with audiences

It opened at number one, beating Mars Attacks! and 101 Dalmatians, before Beavis and Butt-Head Do America pushed it down in week two. That dip still netted $13.1 million, outgrossing Scream and One Fine Day. The film earned $274 million worldwide against a $50 million budget, landing as the ninth top-grossing film of 1996. On TMDB, users rate it 7 out of 10. Audiences did the math early, and the studio followed.

What came next for the cast

Tom Cruise arrived with Top Gun and Rain Man, then spent the next decades trading in action franchises like Oblivion and Top Gun: Maverick. Renée Zellweger came from Empire Records and Reality Bites, shifting into rom-com territory with Bridget Jones's Diary and Me, Myself & Irene. Cuba Gooding Jr. moved from A Few Good Men to a mix of prestige dramas and horror TV. Kelly Preston went from Twins to family films like The Cat in the Hat. The credits do not prove the film changed their trajectories. They merely document what followed.

Where it left its mark

The lines did the heavy lifting. "Show me the money!" and "You had me at hello" became shorthand for the movie, overshadowing the subtler beats Crowe originally favored. Crowe admitted he was surprised the demand for money outshone his preference for the "Kwan" concept, a word for love and respect that didn’t quite catch on. The film also nudged careers. Brandt noted a surge of young people entering the agent business after seeing it. Schaffer agreed the industry accelerated, though he noted some changes would have happened regardless. The script’s quirks left a mark that outlasted the plot.
