What kind of watch this is
Purple Hearts is a 2022 romance drama where a fake marriage becomes a real one. Directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, it runs 122 minutes. The premise is a musician and a Marine pretending to be spouses until he deploys. Then a tragedy hits, and the pretense collapses. It is not a sweet little fluff piece. It is a film that asks what happens when the contract is voided by grief. The tone shifts from light to heavy, often in the same scene.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes sits at 35% as of November 2022. Metacritic, more cautious, lands on 30 out of 100 as of October 2025. The consensus notes that star power fails to fix a script riddled with stereotypes. Claire Shaffer of The New York Times saw potential for a sharp satire, but found the plot contrived. Luke Y. Thompson of The A.V Club called the love scenes devoid of heat and the songs overstuffed. Some critics objected to the positive military portrayal, a choice the writer later defended as character development.
How it did with audiences
The film spent just one day on Netflix before seizing the number one spot on daily popularity charts, replacing The Gray Man after its 8-day run. By the end of its first week, Netflix’s Global Top 10 reported 48.23 million hours watched. That total swelled to 102.59 million hours in the second week, a figure equal to the next five films combined. By September, the count reached 228.6 million hours. In December 2022, Netflix named it the 3rd most watched movie of the year. It is a TMDB user score of 8 out of 10.
What came next for the cast
Sofia Carson traded the Descendants sequels for Carry-On, My Oxford Year, and The Life List. Nicholas Galitzine moved from Cinderella to The Idea of You and eventually Masters of the Universe. The credits list what came next. They do not prove this film caused that shift.
