What kind of watch this is
Victor Salva’s 2001 horror-mystery runs 90 minutes and leans heavily on a single, unsettling question: what is eating you? The film’s tension comes from the slow realization that the desolate highway is not just a setting, but a trap. It is a lean, atmospheric piece that trusts its audience to sit in the discomfort. The tagline does the heavy lifting here.
What the critics said
The reviews are lukewarm, landing in that uncomfortable middle ground where enthusiasm curdles into obligation. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 47% as of January 2026, with an average of 5.2 out of 10. Metacritic lands on 49. Most critics praise the opening but blame the rest, a common split for films that start strong and finish weak. Stephen Holden noted it surrenders to formula once the monster appears. Peter Bradshaw said it goes down the pan.
How it did with audiences
The $10 million budget met a $59.2 million worldwide gross. It opened Labor Day weekend in 2001, taking in $15.8 million in its first four days. That number beat Rush Hour 2 and broke the record for the highest Labor Day opening held by The Crow: City of Angels. The sequel later broke that record. On TMDB, users rate it 6.5. IMDb gives it 6.2 as of February 2026.
