What the critics said
Critics leaned hard into the positive. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 97% as of November 2025, while Metacritic lands on 84/100 as of December 2025. The consensus praises the visual storytelling and music. A.A. Dowd of Rolling Stone noted Coogler is "swinging wide and far beyond the boundaries of franchise fare." Wendy Ide of The Observer added that Coogler's "assurance and vision holds everything together." Some dissent exists, though. Zachary Barnes of The Wall Street Journal argued the film did not pull together thematically. He claimed Coogler's imagination is limited by the conventions of Marveldom. It is a sturdy consensus, even if the details about religion might make a few people squirm.
How it did with audiences
It cost $90 million and took $371.6 million worldwide. That gap is where the money lives. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. Critics argued about the break-even point, with some claiming it needed $170–185 million and others saying $300 million. Variety later reported a theatrical profit of around $60 million. The opening weekend hit $48 million, beating projections. The audience did the math.
Awards
At the 98th Academy Awards, the film snagged 16 nominations, a record high for any movie in history. It walked away with 4 wins, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan and Best Original Screenplay for Ryan Coogler. Autumn Durald Arkapaw took Best Cinematography, becoming the first female and Black winner in that category. The Academy does what it does.
Where it left its mark
Richard Brody of The New Yorker gave it the top spot for 2025. That is a loud endorsement for a film that deals in quiet dread. IndieWire placed it 65th on its list of the 100 best movies of the 2020s, a respectable middle ground. The Hollywood Reporter ranked it 16th among the 25 best horror films of the 21st century.
