What kind of watch this is
James Wan returns to the Lambert family in this 106-minute horror thriller. The premise is simple: they are still haunted, and this time the danger reaches back into the past. It is less a jump-scare machine and more a slow, creeping dread that settles in your bones. The film does not explain the rules; it just makes you feel the weight of them. If you liked the first one, this is the logical next step, provided you can stomach the shadows.
What the critics said
Rotten Tomatoes reports a 38% approval rating based on 130 reviews, with an average score of 4.8 out of 10. Metacritic assigns a weighted average of 40 out of 100. The consensus notes the film lacks the tension of its predecessor. Robbie Collin of The Telegraph called the scares "mostly very scary indeed." Robert Abele of the Los Angeles Times found it "busy-yet-dull," comparing it to a robotic exercise. The film sits in that awkward middle ground where it does its job, but barely.
How it did with audiences
The film was projected to open between $32 and $35 million in the United States and Canada. It pulled in $1.5 million on Thursday and $20 million on Friday, setting the record for the biggest opening day in September box office history. It debuted at number one with a total of $41 million. Globally, it grossed $161.9 million against a budget of $5 million. On TMDB, users rate it 6.7 out of 10.
