What kind of watch this is

James Wan directed this 102-minute horror thriller, which relies on a single, uncomfortable idea: the haunting is not the house, but the person. The film builds its dread through a family’s inability to escape a spiritual invasion that feels deeply personal. It is less about jump scares and more about the suffocating weight of a problem you cannot fix. The tagline does the heavy lifting here, warning you that the danger is internal. It is a slow burn that stays with you long after the lights come on.

What the critics said

Rotten Tomatoes sits at 67%, a score that implies the film works until it doesn’t. Metacritic is drier, landing on 52, which it files under mixed or average. The consensus notes a scary, fun ride, provided you can stomach the shaky final act. Roger Ebert called it not terrifically good, but expected. That is the right temperature for a haunted house. The main complaint, from several critics, is that the second half fails to match the first. Mike Hale of The New York Times compared the back half to a less poetic M. Night Shyamalan fairy tale. It is a specific wound.

How it did with audiences

It cost $2 million to make. It took in $97 million. That ratio is the kind of math that makes studio accountants smile, even if the rest of the industry just shrugs. On TMDB, users give it a 7 out of 10.

What came next for the cast

Patrick Wilson shifted from The A-Team to The Conjuring. Rose Byrne moved from Troy to Neighbors. Ty Simpkins jumped from War of the Worlds to Iron Man 3. Lin Shaye, already a veteran of A Nightmare on Elm Street, simply kept returning to the franchise. The credits show what followed. They do not prove the film caused it.
