Inside Out 2 is a 97-minute animated adventure where Riley’s mental headquarters gets a sudden renovation. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust have been running a smooth operation for years. Then Anxiety walks in. It turns out she is not alone. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the film takes the familiar inner monologue and lets the new emotions drive the chaos. It is a loud, frantic look at what happens when the management team loses control.
What the critics said
Critics cleared the bar, mostly. Rotten Tomatoes tallies 91% positive reviews as of September 2026, while Metacritic sits at 73 out of 100 as of November 2024. The consensus leans on emotional intelligence, spiced with teen angst. Moira Macdonald of The Seattle Times called it a happy head trip for any age. Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph noted Docter's original premise bears expansion well. Some found the hockey plot predictable. David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a C-, arguing sincerity lost to cynicism.
How it did with audiences
The studio spent $200 million on the production. It took in $835 million at the box office. That is a healthy return, though the wider picture tells a different story. Deadline Hollywood calculated a net profit of $650 million after accounting for marketing and other costs, which placed the film first on their list of most profitable films of 2024. On TMDB, users rate it 7.5 out of 10. The numbers suggest the audience was less hesitant about returning to theaters than the industry feared.
