What kind of watch this is

Andrew Stanton directs. The film runs 98 minutes. It is an animated science fiction story about a robot who finds a new purpose after 700 years of doing what he was built for. He meets EVE, a sleek search robot, who races back to space to report to the humans. WALL·E chases her across the galaxy. The premise is simple. The execution is not. It is a film that trusts silence to carry weight, letting the protagonist’s actions speak louder than any dialogue. The tagline says he discovers what he was meant for. It does.

What the critics said

Critics treated it less like a cartoon and more like a serious piece of cinema. Rotten Tomatoes reports a 95% Tomatometer score, with an average rating of 8.9/10. Metacritic sits at 95/100, a number that usually implies the film did exactly what it set out to do. Richard Corliss of Time called it his favorite film of 2008, noting it connected with a huge audience despite the characters' lack of speech. Todd McCarthy of Variety labeled it "Pixar's ninth consecutive wonder." The film appeared on 162 different top 10 lists, the most of any 2008 release.

How it did with audiences

On TMDB, users rate WALL·E 8.1 out of 10. IMDb lists a weighted average score of 8.4/10 as of March 2026. The film cost $180 million to make and grossed $224 million in the United States. Worldwide, it took in $535 million. That math works out to a tidy profit, which is rarer than a robot who learns to love a fern.

Awards

WALL-E took 11 awards from 18 nominations. Andrew Stanton collected the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and the Nebula for Best Script. The film also secured the Animation Kobe Theatrical Film Award, the Satellite Award, and the Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation. It made the National Board of Review’s Top Ten list. A robot cleaning up the debris of civilization, apparently with the same efficiency it applies to its own trophy case.

What came next for the cast

Fred Willard was already in the Anchorman world before WALL·E, and he stayed there for the sequel. Jeff Garlin had been a familiar face in comedies like Daddy Day Care. After 2008, Garlin drifted toward Babylon and Never Have I Ever. Willard kept landing sitcoms like Modern Family. The credits list the roles, not the reasons. They do not say which robot moved which career.
